This the first robot that I have built and, although it's only simple, it took me more than two years of making mistakes and giving up to build. The cost ended up being about £270 but this was due to buying tools, component cases and a lot of components I didn't use or blow up.
The base is made out of standard modeling plastic and the case out of an old cardboard box. I stuck a few googly eyes on that I found in a drawer so that they would shake as it drove along. There are two plastic spoons at the front for it to slide on and folded cardboard attached to the front switches to extend them.
There are two multi-ratio gearboxes at the back attached to a pair of wheels off an old remote controlled car. The robot is powered by a 9v battery and 3 AA batteries. It's controlled by a PIC micro-controller (PIC16F84A) running at 4MHz.
